About Rosemary

When Rosemary Armitage says she is 100 per cent independent, she means it. Not tied to any particular party, Rosemary is instead drawn to issues at the heart of the community that she has represented in local and state politics for the past 12 years.

Happy to consider herself as the conduit between the community, business and government, Rosemary takes on whichever issue is most pressing at the time. This might be representing a local resident who thinks their is not being addressed, through to fighting for Launceston Hospital’s accreditation.

In a career that has spanned bringing up four sons, medical administration, real estate, local government and state government, Rosemary draws on her vast skills and experience to get the job done for Launceston. As the Australian Medical Association Northern division executive officer for over 20 years, a Launceston City councillor for nine years (with two of those as Deputy Mayor), and now as the Launceston Member in the Legislative Council, Rosemary is committed to public service.

This commitment also extends to acting as patron for organisations, such as National Serviceman’s Association Northern Branch and Launceston Musical Society; representing the community on committees, like Growing Tasmania's Economy Select Committee, Tasmanian Electoral Commission Inquiry and Launceston Retail Partnership Project Group; being ambassador for the RSPCA; serving as a Justice of the Peace; and as an Independent Person for Tasmania Police.

As an independent member of the Legislative Council, Rosemary most enjoys the connection she has fostered with people. She has used this opportunity to keep people informed about what it is that matters to them; whether that is about the neighbour’s fence, what their council rates are spent on, or where Launceston’s needs factor into state decisions.
