Ms ARMITAGE question to LEADER for the GOVERNMENT in the LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, Ms RATTRAY

[2.56 p.m.]

Regarding the fire and malicious damage event at Ashley Youth Detention Centre in October 2025, have any charges been laid against any person involved, and if not, why not?

ANSWER

Just by way of explanation, because it's charges, it relates to the minister for Police. In respect to the incident at AYDC on 5 October 2025, three young people were charged with arson, and destroying property, in contravention of the Criminal Code Act 1924 and Police Offences Act 1935.

The three young people all pleaded guilty to the matters, and each was convicted. Their sentences were global, including other matters. Youth 1 (16 years of age at the time of the offence): 18‑month detention order, wholly suspended for two years; youth 2 (15 years of age at the time of offence): 36week detention order ; youth 3 (16 years of age at the time of offence): conviction recorded.
