Question - Bus interchange for Launceston
Thursday 20 June 2024
Ms ARMITAGE question to LEADER of the LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL Mrs HISCUTT
[2.45 p.m.]
During the recent state election there was a commitment by the Liberal Government - and I note it was a re-elected majority Liberal Government commitment - to invest in a modern urban bus interchange in the heart of Launceston. My understanding is that it was to be in lower St John Street. Can you please advise whether this proposal is still likely to go ahead and if so, what is the timeline?
ANSWER
Mr President, I note the reference has been made to an interchange location on lower St John Street. This will be the location of the Regional Bus Service Transit Centre relocated from the temporary site on Charles Street. The original transit centre will cater for intercity and east coast bus services. The Department of State Growth has secured a lease for the site at 25 St John Street, subject to council approval, for use as a regional bus transit centre.
Planning approval processes are currently in train. The department is undertaking early scoping of work on what will be needed to deliver the Metro interchange for urban services in the heart of Launceston.
