Ms ARMITAGE question to MINISTER for SPORT, Mr DUIGAN
[2.41 p.m.]
With changes to UTAS Stadium and apparent displacement of the North Launceston Football Club, what assistance can the government provide to assist them to secure a permanent home?
ANSWER
Mr President, the government has always been and continues to be a strong supporter of the North Launceston Football Club. I recognise their long association and history at UTAS Stadium. That's why the government initiated a working group earlier this year with Stadiums Tasmania, the NTFA, AFL Tasmania and the City of Launceston to work through the future of the Inveresk precinct.
The government has always maintained that the North Launceston Bombers will have a long-term home. Certainly, that was my message when I met their president, Adrian Hall, on site last week for an update on the discussions he's been having with the working group. Representatives from the NTFA and Stadiums Tasmania were also present to explore options within the precinct.
I'm aware the North Launceston Football Club is due to hold its AGM Wednesday next, where the board will be asked to consider future planning for the club. I expect this will include consideration of alternative club rooms in the Inveresk precinct.
Stadiums Tasmania, as the venue owner and operator of UTAS Stadium, remains committed to providing North Launceston with ongoing access to UTAS Stadium as their home ground for games regardless of where their future club rooms are ultimately located. It was good to be on site with them the other day to have a look at how that would work in practice. There is a quite a good outcome there. They will also have access to all key spaces within the stadium that are available for hire through venue hire agreements as required.
Mr Hall has indicated to me he intends for the club to write to me and the government to advise of the board's decision and its preferred pathway forward regarding its club rooms. We recognise that this is a significant decision for the club and its members and acknowledge that they asked for the opportunity for this meeting to occur before decisions about alternative are finalised.
